Vancouver Mosquitos

One of the great things about living in the Vancouver area is the relative absence of biting insects. Why is it that, although mosquitos come into my house in North Burnaby, they never seem to bite? I swat them, but they never have blood in them, so it is not that they have fed on other mammals or birds. Some species of mosquito are exclusively vegetarian, so maybe that is what we have here. The one I photographed in my bathroom obviously would not bite no matter the species because, from his feathery antennae, he is male. Only females are bloodsuckers (just talking about mosquitos here, folks).

Does anyone know why the mosquitos here are so nice?
