Cop Saves Dog

A West Vancouver policeman impulsively jumped into the raging waters of the Capilano River and saved a police dog in danger of drowning.

"The former Olympic baseball player jumped into the river in his full duty belt and uniform. He grabbed the dog's leash and put the 35-kilogram German shepherd back on shore." (Province newspaper)

I can see how he might unreflectingly do that, but why did they turn him into a hero? The dog would have probably have made it anyway, and the cop himself might well have been drowned. Instead of being publicly rewarded, the policeman should have been quietly told not to be so impetuous next time.

But no: ' "What happened on the morning of [June 13] just shows the depth of courage, strength of character that's required for every first-responder," said Cpl. Fred Harding, the department's spokesman.'

Bullshit!
